Nepal – The Last Mine Has Been Found

Four years after the end of the civil year, the UN has declared Nepal to be the second (after China) landmine-free country in Asia. Since the peace agreement 2007 53 minefields have been cleared.

Brightnews! Landmines continue to kill and to mutilate their mainly civil victims for decades after the end of a conflict. Getting rid of them is difficult and very expensive and it’s therefore positive news indeed that Nepalese don’t have to worry about mines anymore. Now would also be the time for the major powers (Russia, China, India, Pakistan and the USA) to endorse the international Anti-Personnel Landmines Convention, already ratified by 156 states and thereby effectively ban landmines.
